AFRICA & TRAVEL
A key territory since his early years as a photojournalist, Africa represents for Raymond Depardon both a space for escape and a place for investigation and questioning.
His films shot on the continent blend journalistic observation with documentary sensitivity. In Africa : How Is Pain Doing? and the fiction film Captive of the Desert, he explores the traces of colonialism, the conflicts, and the contradictions of Western presence. He films with distance and restraint, avoiding imposed commentary, allowing the complexity of African realities to emerge.
His work questions the role of the witness and the responsibility of the Western gaze.
